The Identification of Firearms and Forensic Ballistics
1st Edition 1934, Reprinted Barnes & Company 1962.
Firearms which are used in crimes of violence can be divided into two main types: Smooth-Bores and Rifled Arms. Both these types, especially the latter, can be subdivided into a number of varieties; but the forensic problems which arise will generally fall into two main categories corresponding with the two main types, although there will sometimes be a certain amount of overlapping. It will, therefore, be convenient first to consider the two main types of firearms, and then the various subdivisions, as a thorough understanding of these apparently elementary rudiments will smooth the way to appreciating and investigating the more difficult and technical questions which inevitably arise in crime detection.
